When is registration?
The girls youth hockey program is currently run as part of the Altoona Youth Hockey Association, with the home rink being Altoona Hobbs. Registration for Altoona Youth Hockey is in September . This program is a recreational, no-cut program accepting players of all skill levels. Practices will start around the third weekend in October (depending on ice availability). If you miss registration but still want to play, check the Altoona Youth Hockey website for further information, or email us at info@chippewavalleygirlshockey.org.

What team would she play on, based on her age?
Hockey age divisions are based on the calendar year (NOT grade level).
U14: Girls born in 1992 or 1993
U12: Girls born in 1994 or 1995
U10: Girls born in 1996, 1997, or 1998 (possibly 1999- see below)

U10 is the youngest all-girl team offered. We have occasionally had girls who were 7 play on the U10 team, if the girl prefers to not play on a coed team. Otherwise, girls born in 1999 or after can play on coed teams through Altoona Youth Hockey or Eau Claire Parks & Rec.

How are the teams formed? What if she’s never played before?
There has generally been one team at each age division. All girls, regardless of skill level or experience, are welcome and encouraged to play. With the increasing interest in girls hockey, we expect we will eventually have more than one team at some age levels. If that occurs, we will have tryouts for team formation, but it will remain a no-cut program. Each year, we have had first-time skaters at every age level, including U14! If your daughter is a beginner, (or even if she’s not!) we would encourage her to try to skate as much as possible before the season starts. Eau Claire Hobbs has Open Skate starting October 8 on Sundays from 5:30 -7:30 PM and Wednesdays from 6:15-8:15 PM.

What equipment is needed?
Safety is a #1 priority in hockey. The girls and womens' leagues are all "no-check," up to and including college and Olympic programs. Nevertheless, there is still body contact, and of course there is plenty of "ice contact," especially for beginners! That means hockey does require protective equipment. The standard equipment each player needs includes: helmet, mouth guard (required!), shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey gloves, breezers (hockey pants), shin pads, hockey socks, skates, a stick, a practice jersey, and hockey tape.
Altoona Youth Hockey will have some used equipment available for sale at registration. Used equipment is also available at Play It Again Sports and other skate stores in the area. The earlier you shop, the better the selection. There is a lot of used equipment out there in the hockey community, so take advantage of it!

How much does it cost?
Registration fees for Altoona Youth Hockey are expected to be as follows: U10 = $125; U12 = $210; U14 = $220.
Fundraising: All Altoona Youth Hockey players are required to either sell $100 worth of candy bars, or pay a "buyout" of $50 at the time of registration.
Equipment: A complete set of used equipment, purchased at a store, will cost about $175. (Borrow equipment if you can!)
Non-resident fee: In the past, all non-residents of Altoona have paid an additional $15 fee, since the ice rink has been an Altoona city building.
Volunteer hours: Each family must donate 30 hours of volunteer time helping the association run. This may include working the concession stand, running the clock, etc. More information is available at altoonahockey.com.

What is the time commitment? Practice and game schedules? When does the season start?
Most weeks, the team will practice twice a week. The exact schedule will vary from week to week, depending on ice availability. U12 and U14 teams can expect to play about 10 home games, and 10 away games. U10 will play fewer, probably around 12-14 games total. In addition, most teams will travel to 2 weekend tournaments, and there will be a home tournament in Altoona. You can view schedules at altoonahockey.com. The practices will start the third weekend in October, if the ice is ready. Games will start in early November and go through early March.
